Tube end leaking...HELP!!!

Tube end leaking...HELP!!!

Postby paulandkelly on Thu May 14, 2009 9:20 pm

Hi, our 13 month old had a PEG a couple of months ago. Since then we have had to change the end four times as the ends keep stretching and leaking. He is on continuous overnight feeds and if we don't realise it is leaking he ends up soaking through his clothes, sheets etc. We are currently taping the line in, but it has also leaked under the tape. We are careful not to push the end too far in, but have had nothing but trouble with it.
We generally use an Applix pump, but are currently trialling a Flocare pump. We have the same problem with both pumps. I think it is a Bard tube.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul.

Hi

As you know PEG feeding ports can be replaced when necessary but the frequency you need to replace is unacceptable.
A couple of years ago we experienced the same problem here and found it was actually a fault with the feeding adapter (port), the stopper on the medication port doesn't fit or sit properly, Bard replaced the faulty batch and investigated the problem.
If this is not the problem a temporary solution is to remove the feeding adapter and place in boiled water for a short time, this can help to shrink the plastic back to its original size.
In the meantime you can use another brand as long as you know the size of the PEG tube. Most enteral device manufacturers produce them and they can all be used with the Bard PEG tube.

Hope this helps
